Without a TV guide, a 24,000-channel list is close to unusable. You cannot see what is on, you cannot plan around a match, and you end up scrolling blindly through names you do not recognise.
The good news is that EPG faults come from a short list of causes, and almost none of them mean anything is wrong with your subscription. Four of the five are fixed on your own device in under a minute.
What EPG actually is
EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide — the schedule that tells your player what is showing now, what is next, and what is on for the following few days.
It is a completely separate file from the video streams. Your player downloads the channel list, then downloads the guide, then matches one to the other. That separation is why the guide can fail while every channel still plays perfectly, and it is the single most useful thing to understand here.
If channels play but the guide is empty, your subscription is working. The video and the guide are delivered independently, so a blank guide almost never means an account problem. Stop re-entering your password.
Diagnose it in one question
| What you see | Almost certainly | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Guide completely empty, everywhere | Still downloading, or blocked | Causes 1 and 4 |
| Programmes shown, but at the wrong times | Time zone | Cause 2 |
| Guide fine on some channels, blank on others | Unmatched channel IDs | Cause 3 |
| Was working, suddenly stopped | Stale cache | Cause 5 |
| Only shows now and next, nothing further ahead | Normal for that app | See below |
Cause 1: it simply has not finished downloading
The guide is a large file — often several megabytes covering thousands of channels across several days. On first setup it downloads after the channel list, and on a slower connection or an older box that can take two or three minutes.
People routinely declare the guide broken after twenty seconds and start changing settings that were never wrong.
What to do
- Leave the app open on the channel list for three full minutes.
- Do not force-close it while it is working.
- Then back out and reopen the guide.
If it populates, nothing was ever wrong. On a weak device, expect this wait after every fresh install.
Cause 2: your device clock is wrong
This is the most common real fault, and it produces the most confusing symptom: the guide is full of programmes, but everything sits at the wrong time. A show listed for 8pm is actually on at 5pm.
Guide data carries timestamps in a standard reference time. Your player converts those into your local time using the device’s clock and time zone. If either is wrong, every programme shifts by a fixed number of hours.
Fix it on the device, not in the app
- Firestick: Settings → Preferences → Time Zone. Set it correctly and enable automatic time.
- Android / Android TV: Settings → System → Date & time → use network-provided time.
- Smart TV: in the system settings, not the IPTV app.
- MAG box: System Settings → Time Zone, then restart the box.
Do not reach for the app’s “EPG time shift” setting first. It exists to correct a genuine offset in the guide data itself, and using it to paper over a wrong device clock means everything breaks again the moment the clock corrects itself — usually at a daylight-saving change. Fix the clock; leave the shift at zero.
A note on cheap Android boxes
Budget boxes with no internal battery lose the time whenever they are unplugged, and if they cannot reach a time server on boot they guess. If your guide is correct some days and wrong on others, this is why.
Cause 3: guide data exists but does not match your channels
Every channel carries an identifier, and every guide entry carries one too. The player matches them. If a provider renames a channel or changes its ID, the guide entry no longer attaches to anything and that channel shows blank while its neighbours are fine.
This one you genuinely cannot fix yourself. Some players let you map a channel to a guide source manually, but it is tedious and it breaks again on the next update.
What to do instead
Tell your provider exactly which channels have no guide. It is a real fault at their end, it affects every subscriber, and it is quick for them to correct once someone reports it. Most providers never hear about it because people assume it is their own setup.
Cause 4: your connection is blocking the guide file
The guide often downloads over a different port from the video. Some ISPs and public networks block that port while leaving video traffic alone, which produces the odd result of every channel playing while the guide stays permanently empty.
How to test it in 30 seconds
- Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone so it uses mobile data.
- Open your IPTV app and check the guide.
- If it fills on mobile data but never on home Wi-Fi, your network is blocking it.
A VPN or a DNS change usually resolves it. This is the same underlying cause as several authorisation failures, and worth ruling out early.
Cause 5: the app is holding a stale cache
Players cache guide data so it does not download every launch. When that cache corrupts, or when a subscription is renewed and the app keeps the old copy, the guide can empty out or freeze on yesterday’s schedule.
Clearing it properly
- TiviMate: Settings → EPG → force an update. If that fails, remove the playlist and re-add it.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: delete the user profile in the app, then clear the app cache in device settings, then log in again.
- Any device: Settings → Apps → your player → Clear cache. Clear cache, not clear data, unless you are prepared to log in again.
Why some apps show less guide data than others
Even with everything configured correctly, players differ in how much they show:
| Player | Typical guide depth | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| TiviMate | Several days | Full grid, the best of any player |
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Several days | Per-channel list |
| Smart TV apps | Often now and next only | Basic |
| VLC | None | No guide support at all |
If you only ever see now-and-next, the app is the limit, not your subscription. Moving to TiviMate on an Android device or Firestick is the fix.
Catch-up depends on the guide
Worth knowing: catch-up works by referencing guide entries. If a channel has no guide data, its catch-up will be missing or greyed out too — so fixing the guide often restores catch-up at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my IPTV guide empty?
Usually it has not finished downloading. The guide is a large file that loads after the channel list and can take two or three minutes on first setup. If it is still empty after that, check your device clock and time zone, then clear the app cache.
Why does my IPTV EPG show the wrong times?
Your device time zone is wrong. Guide data uses a standard reference time that your player converts to local time using the device clock, so an incorrect zone shifts every programme by a fixed number of hours. Fix it in the device settings rather than using the app’s EPG time shift.
Does an empty EPG mean my subscription has expired?
No. The guide and the video streams are delivered separately, so if channels play then your subscription is working. A blank guide is almost always a device or download problem rather than an account one.
How do I refresh the EPG?
In TiviMate, go to Settings, EPG and force an update. In IPTV Smarters Pro, delete the user profile, clear the app cache in device settings, then log in again. Simply reopening the app often will not re-download the guide.
Why do some channels have a guide and others do not?
The channel identifier does not match any entry in the guide data, usually because a channel was renamed or its ID changed. This is a fault at the provider’s end rather than yours. Report the specific channels and it is quick for them to correct.
What is EPG time shift and should I use it?
It manually offsets the guide by a set number of hours. Only use it if your device clock is already correct and the guide is still consistently wrong. Using it to compensate for a wrong device clock breaks again at the next daylight-saving change.
My guide works on mobile data but not on home Wi-Fi. Why?
Your network is blocking the port the guide file downloads over, while still allowing video traffic. That is why channels play and the guide stays empty. A VPN or changing your DNS usually resolves it.
Why does my guide only show now and next?
That is a limitation of the app rather than the data. Basic Smart TV players often show only the current and next programme, while TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro display several days ahead.
